As per reports, Apple is considering introducing AirPods which are equipped with cameras in the future, as indicated by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. In his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman touched upon this interesting aspect of AirPods featuring miniature cameras.
However, he did not delve into the specific applications that will be available for these devices. His commentary was part of a broader discussion based on the aspirations of Apple in the realm of wearable technology.
The small cameras will not be added with the intention for photography, in place of this, they are aimed to function as infrared sensors.
The renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned it in a blog post from June 2024. Kuo revealed that the company aims to start the mass production of AirPods with infrared cameras by 2026.
He also noted that the infrared camera technology would also be similar to the Face ID system which is found in iPhones. According to Kuo, the addition of an infrared camera in the new AirPods would significantly enhance the spatial audio experience when it is used in conjunction with the Apple Vision Pro headset.
He also explained that if a user is watching a video through the Vision Pro while wearing these advanced AirPods, turning their head in a specific direction would allow the sound from that direction to be amplified. Hence, enriching the overall audio and computing experience.
In addition to this, these infrared cameras can also facilitate ‘in-air gesture control’ that further allows users to interact with their devices simply by using hand movements. As for the launch of these innovative AirPods, it is believed it the timeline for mass production in 2026 is true indeed, the release of the AirPods could be soon. These interesting AirPods with infrared cameras can be available for users as early as 2026 or 2027.
