Apple to offer compensation for Apple swelling complaints

A lawsuit concerning battery swelling issues has led Apple to agree to a $20 million settlement. This decision addresses allegations against Apple that certain Apple Watch batteries could expand within their confined spaces.

The watches include the first-generation Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 models. It was claimed that the expansion of batteries could potentially hard other essential components including the display.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claiming that these batteries posed a risk of malfunction. However, Apple has denied it and the company has opted to settle the matter to avoid any legal battles further.

Apple in a statement to CNET defended its product focusing that the Apple Watch has been designed to be safe and reliable. The company explained, “This settlement pertains to buyers of the Original Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3, which are no longer sold.”

It further added, “While we firmly disagree with the allegations against these earlier Apple Watch models, we chose to settle to prevent further litigation.”

Eligibility For The Apple Watch Compensation

Individuals need to have one of the affected Apple Watch models in the U.S. to be eligible for compensation. Along with this they should have also reported battery swelling issues like contacting customer service between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024.

Eligible individuals are required to file their claims by April 10, 2025, through the settlement website. After accessing the Settlement site, they should locate the QR code and scan it using their device so that they can select the preferred mode of receiving payment.

The amount of compensation will vary on several factors, depending on the total number of claims submitted and it is expected to be between $20 to $50.
