2nd gen Chromecast and Chromecast Audio encounter outage

Recent hours have seen users of Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio affected by some issues in casting audio or video content towards devices.

For the Update 3/11, the status was updated by Google saying that the team has identified the cause of the issue that has been affecting Chromecast (2nd gen) and the Chromecast Audio devices.

In the Update 3/10 which was out on Monday, Google acknowledged the problem with Chromecast v2 and Chromecast Audio devices along with working to find a solution.

The original update 3/9 stated that essentially, all users of these two Chromecast models receive messages. The message read, “Untrusted device: [name] could not be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.” Nowadays, this is an alert that pops up on applications (such as YouTube) whenever users try to cast the devices.

They can only close the dialogue box and not go on. There are no fixes from the user’s end, such as reboots or resets, that can solve this problem, however, it works fine, with screensaver functionality (via Google Photos, art, photography, etc.) and even time and weather displays.

Newer models, including the Chromecast (3rd generation) and Ultra, do not show any effects at this time. The recent so-called ‘Untrusted device’ alert leads many users to believe that Google has declared their Chromecasts to be dead or is announcing an end-of-life on these devices.

However, it is more probably a glitch since Google hasn’t really made any major announcements about the deprecation of support for these devices as they did for the first Chromecast (1st gen) in May 2023.

Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio are Google’s oldest devices, both launched during the same event in September 2015. Like all other Chromecast devices, they are also powered through 1.56.x firmware.
