Cybersecurity experts and government agencies have issued a serious alert to organizations and individual users regarding a new wave of phishing attacks targeting Gmail. Cybercriminals are now using sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms to create highly convincing fraud emails.
It prompts the FBI to deliver a straightforward and urgent message to the users to avoid clicking on anything. According to recent reports, it has been revealed that the complexity of Gmail phishing schemes has increased dramatically. Last week a malicious AI hack came into existence when users started receiving AI-generated phone calls that resemble human voices.
Attackers are using AI to generate personalized emails and messages that look exactly like real emails. It fools even the most experienced professionals in less than a minute.
An increase of 49% in phishing at times has been witnessed since the beginning of 2022. Security filters with AI-generated threats make up nearly 5% of these incidents. The alarming trend highlights the shift towards automation in cyber crime indicating that no email service is safe from the attack.
Gmail being a popularly used email platform around the world, is particularly vulnerable to these attacks. If attackers get access to a single Gmail account, they can unlock a wide range of personal and corporate information.
In addition to AI-driven tactics, cybercriminals are also using the newly discovered Open Graph Spoofing Toolkit. This tool manipulates metadata to create deceptive links that seem to come from trusted sources.
The tool allows hackers to modify URL appearances making harmful links nearly indistinguishable from legitimate ones. By making use of services like Cloudflare the attackers can adjust domain settings and track Link status. FBI’s advice to the users has been clear to not click on any suspicious links found in emails or text messages. “Phishing is easier than assembling flat-pack furniture,” as emphasized by Security expert Adrianus Warmernhoven from Nord Security. He highlights how effortlessly attackers manage to take advantage of even a single mistake made by humans.
