Recently, Google released an experimental search engine that doesn’t provide any more of the traditional 10 blue links but instead gives a summary generated entirely by AI.
This resplendent feature is now open to subscribers of Google One AI Premium by merely clicking on the ‘AI Mode’ tab next to other options such as Images and Maps on the search results page.
Robby Stein, a VP of product, shared this on the blog, “We’ve heard from power users that they want AI responses for even more of their searches.” The Google One AI Premium plan includes an additional $19.99 per month charge to get more cloud storage and special treatments to some fiat-controlled AI functions.
Currently, Google has AI Overviews- summaries which often come before old-fashioned links- for its users from over 100 countries, while the company started adding marketing to these overviews last May.
With the advent of AI Mode, users will receive a more detailed summary from AI that will contain hyperlinks to webpages listed in the summary. The original 10-blue links have been replaced with a search box where you can make follow-up questions.
According to Google, it has positioned AI Mode under a customized version of its Gemini 2.0 model, which is endowed with its superior reasoning abilities to handle complex queries effectively.
Search-related advertising will contribute greatly to the expected $350 billion revenue of Alphabet in 2024. Though, the company is battling it out against highly competitive AI startups, especially OpenAI, which has received funding from Microsoft as its strategic partner, since last October, when this feature was integrated into ChatGPT.
This was further emphasized last December at the Reuters NEXT conference by investment chief Ruth Porat, who asserted that AI integration into search is everything big for Google’s long-term strategy.
In February, Chegg, an edtech company, sued Google, alleging that previews would diminish demand for original content and limit publishers’ competitive edge.
