The Google Play Store has launched an innovative feature for VPN providers by introducing a Verified badge that signifies secure and reliable services. This new badge aims to highlight VPN applications that focus on user privacy and safety, as has been mentioned in a recent blog post by the tech giant.
The initiative has been designed to boost users to make well-informed decisions regarding the VPN apps they select to download and use. The Verified badge will be seen on the details page of the VPN app and within search results, serving as a testament that the service adheres to the safety criteria of Google.
Google states, “Securing the VPN badge goes beyond mere compliance – it demonstrates that your VPN app is committed to safety.” It highlights how this verification can assist providers in differentiating themselves in a saturated VPN marketplace.
To qualify for this new badge, VPN providers need to undergo a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation which assesses the security measures of the application.
In addition to this, VPN applications need to have a minimum of 10,000 installations and 250 user reviews. They also need to have an organization developer account which would be available on Google for at least 90 days to be eligible.
Developers who want the badge must offer details on their user data collection practices and also need to agree to independent security evaluations. While different vectors influence the assessment, Google notes that meeting these criteria enhances the chances of getting the VPN badge verified.
This initiative from Google is a response to the growing concerns regarding the safety of VPN applications. Earlier this month, Google issued warnings about legitimate VPN applications being exploited as a way for malware infections. Moreover, VPN downloads have increased in the US recently because of the temporary restrictions that have been imposed on TikTok.
