Innovative safety features for young users launched by Google

Google has launched a series of innovative safety features that aim at safeguarding its young users across various applications. It includes a cutting-edge machine learning system designed to estimate user ages.

Recently, Neal Mohan, YouTube’s chief highlighted that Google has crafted a new model which is capable of assessing user ages and customizing content accordingly.

Google on this initiative elaborated, “As we strive to enhance age-appropriate protections, one of the most intricate hurdles is accurately determining a user’s age. This year, we will initiate testing of a machine learning-based age estimation model in the U.S.”

Further, it was added, “This model assists us in discerning whether a user is over or under 18, allowing us to implement safeguards that foster more suitable experiences. We plan to expand this technology to additional countries in the future.”

Google acknowledges that accurately moderating online content has long posed challenges as current age-detection methods have often fallen short of reliably shielding young users from potential risks.

However, the search for innovations is still ongoing. Last year, in its efforts to increase the minimum age for social media access, the Australian government announced its collaborations with experts to explore various age detection technologies including facial recognition.

Face ID has shown some cases where concerns have been raised regarding the uploading of personally identifiable information online, especially when minors are involved.

Although Google has not disclosed specific details about the functionality of its new system. It expresses confidence that it will enhance its ability to decide the age of the users and adjust in-app experiences accordingly.

In addition to this, Google has rolled out an update to its Family Link supervision and management tools making them more user-friendly with a revamped app layout.

Parents now can limit app access during school hours and new payment support options will be introduced through the Google Wallet for the child.
