Smartphone sales witnessed an increase of 7% in 2024 compared to the previous year. It totals 1.22 billion units, signaling a recovery after two years of decline, as has been reported by Canalys.
Apple and Samsung have shared the top spot with each holding 18% of the market which is closely followed by Xiaomi at 14%. Transsion captured 9% while both Oppo as well as Vivo secured 8% each. Lenovo as well as Honor each accounted for 5% with Huawei and Realme trailing at 4% a piece.
It is worth noting that Canalys and some other analysts group Transsion brands together but treat BBK brands separately. If Vivo, Oppo, and Realme are combined, BBK will dominate with 20% of the market, overshadowing both Apple and Samsung.
However, this would put a damper on the countless headlines proclaiming the joint reign of Apple and Samsung. Despite some frustration, the performance of Apple was attributed to growth in emerging markets and steady results in Europe and North America.
Xiaomi, on the other hand, thrived because of the strong demand in Mainland China and ongoing strategic moves into emerging markets. In 2024, Apple sold 225.9 million iPhones which is a little less than in 2023, while Samsung moved 222.9 million Galaxy smartphones.
Xiaomi witnessed a 15% increase, selling 168.9 million units and Transsion matches the growth with 106.7 million units sold. Overall, smartphone sales in Mainland China grew by 4% compared to 2023, with North America and Europe seeing increases of 1% and 3%, respectively. Apple focused on the fourth quarter of 2024, Apple led the pack with 77.1 million shipments that captured 23% of the market. Samsung has followed with 51.9 million units and a 16% market share. Vivo rounded out the list with 26.4 million.
