Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI visions a future where artificial general intelligence or AGI could significantly reduce the costs of various goods. However, he does not miss the aspect where such technology could get exploited and used by governments who seek to exert control over their citizens.
Altman, warns the world about the aspect of AGI getting misused, and as a result, a situation arose last month where a ChatGPT outage in OpenAI Services came to the surface. In a recent blog entry, he described AGI as “a system which is capable of addressing increasingly intricate challenges at a human level across multiple domains.” He also pointed out that we are starting to see systems that hint at the emergence of AGI.
He remarked that while some sectors may remain largely unchanged, the pace of scientific advancement is likely to go beyond the current levels potentially overshadowing all other impacts of AGI.
It has been indicated by Altman that while many goods are expected to become more affordable, certain items, especially land might experience substantial price hikes.
He stated, “The cost of numerous products will eventually plummet (as the expenses associated with intelligence and energy currently limit many possibilities), while the prices of luxury items and scarce resources like land may soar even higher.”
Altman sees AI becoming very much integrated into society becoming an integral part, however, he expresses his concern about the potential misuse of the technology by authoritarian governments.
He further explained, “AI will infiltrate every facet of the economy and daily life; we will anticipate a world where everything is intelligent. Many of us believe it’s essential to grant individuals greater control over technology than we have in the past, which includes increasing open-source initiatives while recognizing that achieving a balance between safety and personal empowerment will necessitate compromises.”
Adding to this, he emphasized, “While we must avoid recklessness and anticipate that some significant decisions regarding AGI safety may be unpopular, we believe that as we approach the realization of AGI, leaning towards individual empowerment is crucial.”
