Massive Gmail Update to Reshape Email Access for Billions

Gmails new update to change how users access emails

The new protocol was announced by Google for about 2 billion Gmail users with the ultimate security improvements, like revamping the log-in process.

The more secure method is to identify a person by sending the access code through SMS, which Google will phase out gradually within the next couple of months to pave the way for a new QR code process.

For this matter, as claimed by a spokesperson for Forbes after the release of Google’s press statement, the authentic SMS overuse issue around the world can be addressed suitably. As for a further test, The Independent has contacted Google.

Ross Richendrfer, a privacy and security researcher at Google, in a speech he rendered to Forbes, said, “Just as we aim to move beyond passwords with innovations like passkeys, we also want to eliminate SMS messages for authentication.”

He added, “In the coming months, we will be rethinking how we verify phone numbers. Instead of entering your number and waiting for a six-digit code, you’ll simply scan a QR code displayed on your screen using your phone’s camera app.”

Indeed, it requires almost 1.8 billion Gmail users all over the world to undertake two-step verification, and SMS verifies the users’ comparatively high identities.

Although it is quite a bit more secure, the strategy easily rendered itself vulnerable by means of a fraudster going through the code.

A generic type of attack is through phishing which basically allows cyber criminals to deceive victims into revealing their security code by pretending to be Google or their mobile service provider.

Google claims that there are times when people aren’t able to access the device that receives the SMS verification code.

Mr. Richendrfer remarked, “SMS codes pose a significant risk for users. We’re excited to unveil this innovative approach to reduce vulnerabilities for attackers and enhance user safety against malicious activities.”
