Xbox plans a handheld device launch this year

Microsoft is now expected to release its next-generation Xbox Series X/S successor soon. It is anticipated to come out sometime in 2027 while a handheld Xbox does seem really likely to materialize later this year as well.

Windows Central reports that the successor to the Xbox Series X/S has been deemed green-lit by CEO Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and it is now ‘fully in production.’ It doesn’t go into specifics, but it describes this console as a ‘premium successor to the powerful Xbox Series X’ for a 2027 release date.

The company has clearly stated that works are indeed ongoing toward the development of a Series X/S competitor. Xbox president Sarah Bond calmed fans last year, saying that there is an investment in ‘our next-generation roadmap’. It was also mentioned that there is a focus on delivering ‘the largest technical leap that you will have ever seen in a hardware generation.’

Windows Central also alludes to something else brews in the Xbox hardware factory from Microsoft in the nearer future. Reputedly, an unnamed ‘PC gaming OEM’ is working with Microsoft to bring an Xbox-branded handheld later this year. Dubbed Keenan internally, it is reportedly designed unmistakably in an ‘Xbox’ way, having familiar aesthetics and an Xbox guide button.

An Xbox handheld is not a very recent idea. Xbox chief Phil Spencer would mention how Microsoft had pretty much designed an Xbox handheld before in 2017. He has brought the topic up again over the last year, leading to speculation that it has been resurrected. When asked about a possible Xbox handheld last November, Spencer hinted that it might still be a couple of years away. Still, with the Switch 2 up and coming and talk of a possibly portable PS5 from Sony, Microsoft might have its hand forced to speed things along.
